286 Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991 Mexican) Seated Boy signed and dated Tamayo '29 bottom left graphite drawing 35 x 20.5cm. * Provenance Dartington Hall Trust. The present work was probably purchased in Mexico by Mark Tobey whilst on his extensive South American travels. These travels were sponsored by Dorothy Elmhirst who encouraged and finance the purchase of pictures which Tobey thought would be of use as learning resources art Dartington School. Rufino Tamayo was born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1899. As a boy in school he spent much of his time drawing which caused his aunt to withdraw him from classes and put him to work in her grocery business. Tamayo continued to spend time at the National Museum in Mexico City drawing archeological treasures, especially the pre-Columbian objects which influenced his art for the rest of his life. His modern style made him an object of ridicule amongst the traditional Mexican muralists. Tamayo left Mexico for New York and became a teacher at the Dalton School in Manhattan. Here he remained for ten years producing a huge personal body of work. It was whilst in New York he became interested in printmaking and also the production of paper. Latterly Tamayo became renowned for his intense and beautiful colour sense, Octavia Paz, the Mexican poet and Nobel Laureate said of him 'If I could express in a single word what it is that distinguishes Tamayo from other painters I would say: Sun. For the sun is in all of his pictures whether we see it or not; night itself for Tamayo is simply a sun carbonised'. In 1981 the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art was set up in Mexico City largely financed by the artist. The initial collection comprised of a number of his own works along with a selection of contemporary works from the collection he had made with his wife Olga Flores. These included works by Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Fernand Leger and Pablo Picasso. The Museum joined with the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic and Mexican Art which opened in 1974 in Oaxaca. £2000-3000
