| 312 | Leon de Smet (Belgian 1881-1966) Cote Rochese signed with a monogram and dated 1920 bottom left oil on board 49.5 x 59cm. De Smet was born in Ghent, East Flanders on 20 July 1881 and received his artistic training at the academy at Gand under J J Delvin (1853-1922). He was influenced by the luminosity and strongly impressionistic and rhythmic style of Emile Claus (1849-1924) and de Smet's subjects were landscape, figurative and still life. In 1914 de Smet moved to London where, among others, he painted Bernard Shaw. With the exception of a short period around 1920 when de Smet tinkered with his style to embrace more expressionistic influences, he remained true to his primary style of impressionism. The present rhythmical work, with thick impasto, demonstrates a skilful, imaginative and confident use of colour. £6000-8000 | Nil |
